The Sony Alpha 9 II (A9 II) is a mirrorless camera with a 24x36 sensor. The second edition of the sports photographer series includes some ergonomic tweaks, but no resolution or autofocus changes.
Sony struck a major blow in the spring of 2017 with the world's first mirrorless camera body with a 24x36 sensor designed for sports photographers, wildlife photographers, and anyone looking for reliable autofocus tracking and fast shooting.
The Sony Alpha 9 (first of its name) challenged a world then dominated by Canon and Nikon with the EOS-1DX Mark II and D5, with features like autofocus and a 20 fps electronic shutter burst.
With the rise of Sony mirrorless cameras in recent years, the scope and ergonomics have broken with previous models. The introduction of a joystick for selecting collimators, as well as a dual slot for SD cards, was particularly notable.
The Sony A9 had some flaws, so Sony tried to remedy the problem by making small changes to its camera.
This is how the Alpha 9 II was created.
Taking advantage of the ergonomic improvements of the Alpha 7R IV (A7RIV) while keeping its speed, the A9 version II was presented in the fall of 2019 at a price of € 5,400 to anticipate the release of two sports SLRs from Canon and Nikon: the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III and the Nikon D6.
The new Sony A9 II builds on the impressive legacy of its predecessor, maintaining groundbreaking speed performance, including seamless continuous shooting at up to 20 frames per second with auto focus and 60 times per second exposure tracking, while incorporating even more features straight from the professional voices.
The Sony Alpha 9 II is an update to one of the most popular cameras in history. It offers dramatically improved connectivity and file transmission, continuous shooting at 10 frames per second with a mechanical shutter, while maintaining its high level of durability.
The latest Sony Alpha a9 II camera is the ultimate tool for professionals in all fields. With 55 native lenses introduced so far.
GETTING STARTED WITH THE SONY A9 II
Sony has made only minor changes to the ergonomics of the Alpha 9 II.
The handle has been hollowed out, which improves the grip. A rubber coating has been added to the joystick, which feels better.
The second SD card slot now supports UHS-II speeds. Finally, the buttons on the right shoulder have also been slightly adjusted. After exposure compensation, a lock is applied to prevent unwanted adjustment.
The rear dial has been moved to the top of the A9 chassis. There is still a wheel on the left shoulder that can be used to change the sequence of shots and the type of focus. A wheel that should have been included on the rest of the series.
Finally, the connection is also different: instead of the micro-USB used previously, there is now a USB-C 3.2 connector. The RJ45 Ethernet port now supports 1 Gbps throughput and IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac for better image transfer via Wi-Fi.
Aside from these ergonomic and data transmission improvements, the Sony Alpha 9 II retains all the features of its predecessor.
The same 24.2-megapixel backlit and stabilized stacked CMOS sensor, BionX chip or autofocus mechanism are all present under the hood of the beast.
THE SONY ALPHA 9 II IS CUSTOMIZABLE TO YOUR NEEDS
The Sony Alpha 9 2 does not contain the 5.76 million dot viewfinder of the A7R IV and retains its 3.6 million dot viewfinder (0.78x magnification).
It can still be set to display at 120 Hz, which is useful for sports photographers; it's always a plus for them. The overall flexibility of the camera (changing the functions of the many buttons and controls) is also a plus.
Since the arrival of firmware version 2, it is even possible to make the blind close when the camera is turned off. Sony was influenced by Canon, which already offers this feature on its EOS R, EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras.
This prevents dust from settling on the sensor when changing lenses.
ENHANCED BIONZ X PROCESSOR
The Sony a9II features an enhanced BIONZ X image processor. This processor allows the Sony a9 2 body to shoot at up to 20 frames per second with minimal shutter lag.
The Sony a9 II also features a 5-axis stabilization system, which is important for video and still photography. Sony's BIONZ X image processor is the company's high-end image processing chip.
It is an important component of the Sony alpha 9 2, as it allows the camera to shoot up to 20 frames per second with extremely low shutter lag.
FULL-FRAME CMOS SENSOR EXMOR RS BSI OVERLAY
The Sony Alpha a9 II is a full frame mirrorless camera with a new Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor.
This sensor is designed to capture high-resolution images with low noise and wide dynamic range.
Sony's proprietary BIONZ X image processing engine is used to process the sensor's RAW data, and the resulting images are transferred to an XQD memory card.
The Sony a9 II is an excellent choice for photographers and videographers who need high performance and versatility in one camera.
SONY A9 II VS CANON EOS 1DX MARK III AND NIKON D6
The Sony a9 II is a professional sports camera that excels in fast-paced shooting. It features a 24.2-megapixel full-frame Exmor RS CMOS sensor and a BIONZ X image processor.
The Sony G Lens provides excellent image quality, and the autofocus system is incredibly fast and accurate. The a9 II also has impressive video capabilities, with 4K video recording and S-Log3 gamma.
The Canon EOS 1DX Mark III is a great camera for sports photography, but it doesn't come close to the Sony alpha 9 mark II in terms of speed or autofocus performance.
The Nikon D6 is another great option for sports photography, with excellent image quality and fast autofocus.
However, the Sony a9 II is the better choice if you need the best possible performance.
WHY DO WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHERS NEED THE NEW SONY A9 II?

In addition, the A9 II features an updated image sensor and a new image processing engine. This allows the camera to capture more detail and produce more realistic images.
Finally, the Sony alpha 9 mark 2 is designed to withstand harsh conditions. It is waterproof and has a robust magnesium alloy body. This makes it an ideal choice for photographers who work in harsh environments.
The new Sony A9 II is a high-end camera that will take wildlife photographers to the next level.
