Olympus's photo division, acquired by an investment fund, becomes OM System. Its first camera, the OM-1 (Olympus OM-1), is in line with Olympus' previous high-end cameras.

OM System has used its first camera to identify spirits after acquiring Olympus. To do so, the new firm is releasing the OM-1, a high-end camera that simply replaces the OM-D E-M1 Mark III , which is less than two years old.

The camera's appearance is unchanged from its predecessor. The changes are actually found inside, in the form of a new sensor, a new viewfinder and a new processor... a significantly transformed camera that also swims in the waters of the OM-D E-M1 X by offering superior performance on paper.

We will meet three potential rivals in micro 4/3 mount, which are the Panasonic Lumix GH5 II, GH6, and the old Lumix G9. On comparable ranges, we can consider the Fujifilm X-T4 or the Nikon Z6, or even the Canon EOS R6 if you are a fan of full frame.

INTRODUCING THE OM SYSTEM OM-1 (OLYMPUS OM-1) CAMERA

The OM-1's advanced TruePic X processor enables extremely precise focusing and subject detection.

You'll get vibrant colors and sharp images without any noise thanks to the new Cross Quad Pixel AF mode of the Micro 4/3 BSI Live MOS sensor. The OM-1 delivers exceptional results in a tiny, lightweight body.

Thanks to strategically positioned seals in the housing constructed from lightweight and durable magnesium alloy, this OM System OM-1 offers IP53 dust and splash resistance as well as freeze resistance down to -10°C.

In addition, this OM System OM-1 (Olympus OM-1) is equipped with AI AF detection: subject identification and tracking are faster and more accurate than ever. The vehicle recognition function works for both people and vehicles.

It can identify cars, motorcycles, airplanes, helicopters, trains and birds, as well as animals (dogs and cats).

GETTING STARTED WITH THE OM SYSTEM OM-1 HYBRID CAMERA

For its "first" official camera, the OM SYSTEM will not disconcert Olympus fans.

It's simple: the OM-1 looks similar to the OM-D E-M1 Mark III in terms of design, with the exception of a few features. It also carries over the "Olympus" flocking while displaying a small OM System logo in the lower right corner of the front panel.

So we arrive at a relatively small case weighing 599 g for less than 10 cm high (and 13.5 cm wide). We can still note some significant changes compared to the previous model.

The OM Systems' shutter release has evolved from a system involving the shutter release around the front dial to a system separate from the dial, similar to what is found on Canon cameras.

Along the same lines, the rear dial has been partially incorporated into the frame. This doesn't change much in terms of usability, but we appreciate the old rear dial setup.

Finally, the handle is a bit more hollowed out, which allows for a better grip. The REC button, which can be used to take high-resolution photos, is accessible with a single click thanks to this change.

After these three real modifications, the other external adjustments are only cosmetic.

A NEW LATEST GENERATION BSI SENSOR FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE

The manufacturer introduces a next-generation sensor in the OM-1, taking a substantial step forward in terms of performance. It is a 20MP 4/3 BSI Live MOS sensor that is both back-illuminated and stacked.

The new OM SYSTEM sensor allows for faster shutter speeds and reduced video playback.

The IMX472 sensor revealed by Sony in 2021 seems to be the inspiration for this design.

Therefore, the OM-1 (Olympus OM-1) is the first micro 4/3 hybrid with this innovation.

The new sensor has a wider dynamic range, with a 1 EV increase over the E-M1 Mark III.

The OM-1's sensor, like its predecessors, features 5-axis image stabilization and a gain of up to 7.5 EV according to the CIPA standard. According to OM Digital Solutions, roll image stabilization has been improved, with a gain of up to 8 EV with some lenses.

Users who want to use long exposures with tripods should benefit from this stability. With Live Composite or Live Bulb modes, the OM-1 can use IBIS stabilization.

According to OM Digital Solutions, the OM-1 (Olympus OM-1) should offer exceptional ISO sensitivity. The manufacturer claims that using the latest version of OM Workspace software, which now supports AI-based noise reduction for better image quality in RAW conversion, you will be able to gain 2 EV with an ISO range of 200 to 102,400 (expandable to ISO 80 and 100).

A BOOSTED PROCESSOR AND AUTOFOCUS

This camera also features a built-in TruePic X processor, which significantly improves performance over previous models.

With its increased computing power and faster focusing speeds, this processor also reduces the processing time for high-resolution photos or focus stacking from approximately 10 seconds to just 5 seconds compared to the E-M1X)

Finally, the processor of this professional hybrid camera is improved thanks to a new AI algorithm that uses the characteristics of the sensor to reduce noise.

Additionally, the autofocus is claimed to be up to twice as accurate as the E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X, and it can work down to -8 EV.

OM Digital Solutions has announced a new technology with a Bayer matrix sensor featuring a Quad Pixel AF system. According to the manufacturer, each color filter has 4 subpixels, which provides increased autofocus performance, more powerful cross-type phase detection AF, and better low-light performance.

This new sensor is said to debut in an upcoming OM-D camera. No further details have been released yet, but the new sensor is expected to improve image quality and autofocus performance in OM Digital Solutions cameras.

The OM SYSTEM OM-1's hybrid AF system features 1,053 cross-type AF points, which cover 100% of the image area, compared to 80% for the E-M1 III and E-M1X. Artificial intelligence has also been used to improve subject detection.

The new OM SYSTEM OM1 camera is therefore able to detect and react to any type of subject, like the E-M1X (motor sports, planes, trains, birds, dogs), as well as to any animal in the broad sense. It is also able to detect and track the subject's face and eyes.

The eye is chosen by default by the intelligent AF. If the latter is not visible, it selects the head before moving on to the body. This subject tracking is available in both photo and video, and it is faster thanks to the new sensor + processor pair.

UP TO 120 PHOTOS PER SECOND IN BURST MODE AND SOPHISTICATED TROPICALIZATION

When it comes to burst shooting, the OM SYSTEM OM-1 (Olympus OM-1) improves on its predecessors by a factor of two.

In Single AF mode, the burst shooting rate can reach 120fps in RAW, and up to 50fps in C-AF (continuous focus) mode.

In the viewfinder, there is no black veil when shooting in SH mode. The buffer memory has also been significantly improved, with up to 92 RAW frames at 120 fps (compared to 50 RAW frames at 60 fps on the E-M1X) and up to 70 frames in ProCapture mode.

Let's congratulate them on a job well done. It's true that it has an electronic shutter, but wildlife and sports photographers will appreciate being able to break down events in great detail.

C-AF shooting at 50fps is possible with many compatible lenses, such as the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO, 300mm f/4 PRO, or 150-400mm f/4.5 TC 1.25x PRO. Burst rate for non-compatible lenses will be capped at 25 frames per second (fps).

Burst levels work in tandem with Pro Capture mode, which lets you start shooting before you press the shutter button so you don't miss the action. It'll be interesting to see if there's rolling shutter in this situation.

The OM SYSTEM OM1 features a dust and splash proof construction, making it suitable for use in all conditions. It is IP53 certified, as are several PRO lenses.

As for the shutter, even though the camera has an electronic shutter that can be used to create hundreds of settings, it does not eliminate the mechanical shutter, which can be used to fire at least 400,000 times.

THE OM-1 IS EQUIPPED WITH A 5.76 MILLION DOT OLED ELECTRONIC VIEWFINDER.

The new camera's electronic viewfinder improves in definition and quality, as does the image sensor. A new 5.76 million dot OLED viewfinder with a refresh rate of 120 fps has been added to the OM-1. Its eye relief is 21 mm, with a magnification of 1.65x. During HS bursts, it is displayed without blackout.

The viewfinder is identical to that of the E-M1X, with a magnification of 1.66x and an anti-fog coating for wet weather. This viewfinder has a higher definition than many full-frame mirrorless cameras, which shows that Olympus is going all out.

The OM SYSTEM OM-1 hybrid also has some special features compared to previous cameras.

For example, the camera is now capable of shooting C4K up to 60p in 4:2:2 10-bit internal (up from 24p on previous models) as well as Full HD slow motion up to 240p (with a 60% crop), making for stunning slow motion videos.

The recording format also supports H.264 (8-bit) and H.265 (10-bit), as well as HLG and OM-Log. The maximum video clip length has also been increased.

A zebra pattern appears on the screen to check exposure, or a red border surrounds the image to indicate that video is being recorded.

These settings can also be adjusted for photos and videos separately, as well as during recording.

NEW BLX-1 BATTERY AND REDESIGNED USER INTERFACES

A new BLX-1 lithium-ion battery powers the OM System OM-1. It packs a larger capacity and should allow you to capture 520 photos (up to 1100 photos in eco mode) or 140 minutes of video before needing to be recharged.

It's not as durable as the E-M1X (up to 2580 frames), but it's better than the E-M1 Mark III, which was limited to 420 frames.

There is no external charger included with the case, but it can be charged via USB-C and pass-through power if used with the HDMI connection. The device has a dual UHS-II compatible SD memory card slot.

This compact mirrorless camera comes with a new menu interface, reminiscent of Canon's menus to commemorate the distinction with Olympus.

Improved dials and readability, as well as faster access to certain shooting methods such as focus stacking, high-resolution shooting or Live ND, result in smoother navigation and better readability.

OUR OPINION ON THE OM SYSTEM OM-1 CAMERA

Autofocus is years ahead of its time, combining 60x faster AI subject detection and the first four-way cross-type phase detection using depth mapping.

The sensor is larger and the focus is more precise. It is possible to perform full tracking without fog or loss of focus, and to achieve high frame rates.

Focusing is not only faster and more precise; it now covers everything from trains and planes to racing and rally cars, birds, cats, dogs and more.

With wireless content sharing and live streaming, creators will be delighted with this new mixed camera’s unlimited internal recording in a variety of resolutions, including C4K/4K at 60p. Up to 240p ultra slow motion recording is possible, and a flat OM Log profile is included for internal 10Bit 4:2:2 post-production.

Through the HDMI interface, professional 12-bit ProRes RAW external recorders will capture professional 12-bit ProRes RAW data. There are multiple connection choices, such as stereo/24-bit linear PCM audio, wireless control, USB Type-C charging, and a headphone jack.

The ergonomics of the new mirrorless camera have been improved in many ways, including better handling and increased customization.
