Canon is advancing its RF mirrorless mount with the introduction of a range of APS-C sensors. Wildlife photographers have been eagerly awaiting the EOS R7, the next model in the R series and successor to Canon's 7D Mark II DSLR, which shows its ambitions.

Canon's RF mount has a long history in mirrorless cameras and offers a wide variety of 35mm sensor cameras and lenses.

However, there was something missing for fans of APS-C sensors. There is of course the EF-M mount, but the cameras are rather modest, and the number of lenses is extremely limited.

We thought that given Canon's track record with APS-C sensors, the company would eventually create cameras using the RF mount that convert 1.6x (from full-frame) and use an APSC sensor.

The Japanese company then released the EOS R7 and EOS R10, both smaller than their predecessors.

The latter is aimed at an audience looking to improve their photographic skills using a device like the EOS 250D or 850D.

Canon EOS R7: An APS-C hybrid for wildlife photography

The EOS R7 is aimed at a more sophisticated audience, such as wildlife photographers, promising to be the successor to the much-loved but aging EOS 7D Mark II, a very fast SLR in its day.

While taking up the codes of the EOS R5 and EOS R6 , the EOS R7 nevertheless stands out with two apparent modifications: a focus button placed immediately on the front face, similar to the one seen on Fujifilm cameras, and a rather unusual joystick.

Canon has earned a reputation as the go-to brand for unusual AF controls. The company is still figuring out how to navigate the touchpad and eye adjustment.

This time the joystick has been moved to the right of the viewfinder, along with a selection wheel.

Canon R7: A unique joystick

The EOS R7 has a control clover next to the screen on a ball head, making it a tiny body with a wide range of controls.

As for the user's exterior trick, note that there is also a dual UHS-II SD card slot, as well as the same multi-functional shoe as the EOS R3 (which allows for digital microphones or traditional ports: micro-HDMI, microphone, headphone jack and USB-C).

The electronic viewfinder, meanwhile, only has a resolution of 2.36 Mpts, which is well below the current standard.

The device also features multiple seals and a magnesium chassis for good shock and weather resistance.

The EOS R7 body weighs 612g and measures 13 x 9.2 x 9.2cm when fully assembled.

Obviously, the most remarkable aspect of the beast is what's inside.

Indeed, this R7 is equipped with a 32.5 megapixel APSC sensor (100 to 51,200 ISO), identical to that of the EOS 90D and M6 Mark II, according to Canon, but the development of the sensitive cell has been completely redesigned.

It also offers five-axis mechanical stabilization, which is unique to this model on a Canon APS-C camera for the first time.

It is useful for shooting with fixed focal lengths without stabilization, as it helps stabilize the horizon if needed.
