Just two years after the release of the first generation, Canon introduces a new and improved EOS R6 II. This newer full-frame mirrorless camera is not only improved in almost every area, but also comes at a slightly higher price point.

Canon's RF mount opened up to the APS-C format in 2022 with the EOS R7 and EOS R10. Canon is back at it with its full-frame cameras by unveiling the next generation of its popular EOS R6. Logically named the EOS R6 Mark II, this new camera for professionals and enthusiasts will replace its predecessor on store shelves.

The first version of the R6 II was extremely well received by critics and customers, but two years later Canon has decided to release an updated version. The new camera is supposed to be even more capable than its predecessor while retaining the great versatility that made the original so successful.

Given the popularity of the original R6 II, it's no wonder Canon is excited about this new version.

THE CANON EOS R6 MARK II MIRRORLESS IN MORE DETAIL

24.2 MEGAPIXEL FULL-FRAME SENSOR

The EOS R6 Mark II features a Canon-designed 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor that works in unison with the powerful DIGIC X processor. The processor provides many of the camera's advanced features and offers an excellent balance of resolution and low-light performance while maintaining optimal shooting speed.

The EOS R6 Mark II's new sensor offers increased playback speeds for video and a continuous shooting rate of 40 frames per second in electronic shutter mode. Compared to its predecessor, this new sensor significantly reduces the "rolling shutter" effect, allowing the camera's electronic shutter to be used more effectively to freeze fast-moving objects. It also allows for oversampled 4K 60p video using the full width of the sensor, while helping to improve focus speed, which is one of the many features of the R6 Mark II.

With instant 1.6x in-camera cropping, you can get closer to the action than ever before with the touch of a button. This feature even works when you're looking through the viewfinder, allowing you to zoom in seamlessly if needed.

ADVANCED DUAL PIXEL AF II CMOS WITH EYE DETECTION

The Canon EOS R6 II uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, which uses deep learning artificial intelligence to recognize a wider range of subjects than ever before. These now include people (eye/face/body), vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trains and planes) and animals (dogs, cats, birds and horses).

You can choose the subject type from the menu or, if you are shooting in a variety of situations, set it to Auto. If you're trying to detect people or animals, the EOS R6 Mark II searches for eyes first and lets you specify whether the left or right eye should take precedence. If the eyes are not visible, it will focus on the face instead; and if the person turns away briefly, it will follow the movement of their head. Finally, if none of these are visible, it follows the body movements.

RAW BURST MODE

The Mark II body features a pre-shoot option as part of the RAW burst mode, which allows you to capture action 0.5 seconds before you press the shutter button. This option is extremely useful when shooting unpredictable subjects, such as tennis players or small children, so you don't miss a moment.

When using high-speed SD memory cards, your continuous shooting speed improves; you can now shoot in RAW burst mode for 6 seconds at 30 frames per second, for a total of 191 frames.

Instead of being stored in separate files, all images are saved in a single CR3 file called a roll by Canon. This special file includes the AF tracking data as well as the image files.

However, if necessary, individual JPEGs (or HEIF and RAW files) can be extracted from said roll via Canon's Digital Photo Professional software or in the camera itself before being saved and/or shared.

MOVIE SERVO AF MODE 'DETECTION ONLY' OPTION

The EOS R6 Mark II now has a video servo-focus option called "Detect Only." This option is similar to the "Face Only" feature of the EOS C70 Cinema camera. When enabled, if the subject specified in the "Subject to Detect" menu moves out of focus, the camera stays on its current focus point without automatically refocusing on other nearby subjects.

In practice, when you are focused on a subject and it moves out of frame, the camera will not refocus on the background as it traditionally would. This is often undesirable because the subject will be out of focus when it comes back into the frame.

IN-CAMERA FOCUS BRACKETING

The EOS R6 Mark II's focus bracketing and depth compositing are perfect when you want a wider range of depths in your photo.

Simply specify the type of photo you want, press the shutter button and let the camera do its thing! This technique produces photos with designated areas that are perfect for landscape or city photos.

With this sequence of images, you can get a perfect, ready-to-use result that you can share instantly with others. You can also use this feature as a preview of what could be done in post-production while shooting. This way, you can be sure that you have captured exactly the shot you want.

For macro photography, depth composition is ideal when depth of field is limited. With this feature, you can also take less time for post-processing, as it composes several images together in the camera.

Canon EOS R6 Mk II

4K 60P FULL WIDTH UPSAMPLED VIDEO AND 6K RAW VIDEO

The EOS R6 Mark II delivers 4K 60p high definition footage using the full width of the sensor. In addition, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II creates exceptional images with oversampling from the 6K output.

The camera body is also conducive to heat retention, allowing you to record for up to 610 hours at a time, depending on the temperature of your environment and the capacity of your battery and memory card.

The EOS R6 II produces 6K RAW footage that can be recorded with an Atomos Ninja V+ recorder in ProRes RAW. This not only allows for more detail, but also for adjusting white balance and other settings in post-production.

In addition, Full HD proxy footage can be captured internally on a memory card for filmmakers who need even higher performance from their camera.

ADVANCED THERMAL MANAGEMENT

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II can shoot for extended periods of time by monitoring and managing temperature rises. Videographers will receive a warning before shooting has to be interrupted due to overheating.

To reduce the risk of overheating when the camera is on standby between shots, the low-resolution standby mode has been activated. When this function is activated, the display frequency and image quality are reduced, thus saving power and extending the recording time.

PRE-REGISTRATION OF FILMS

The pre-recording function allows you to stream videos waiting in the camera.

This way, you won't miss any precious moments while waiting to press the record button. The 3 or 5 seconds of recording time before pressing the video record button can be useful when shooting unpredictable subjects, such as weddings or sporting events.

WEBCAM AND LIVE UVC STREAMING SUPPORT

The Canon R6 Mark II can be used as a webcam on PCs and Macs without the need to install additional software to run applications like Skype, Zoom and Teams.

This plug-and-play functionality is powered by the commonly used USB Video Class (UVC) and USB Audio Class (UAC) drivers that come standard with Windows and MacOS operating systems.

This ensures that you always look your best when you're printing online - even better than with a regular computer webcam!

VIDEO ASSISTANCE FEATURES

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is an excellent video camera with several features that guarantee excellent results. This technology has been shared with the cameras used by professional directors of photography.

FALSE COLORS

The EOS R6 Mark II has false-color warnings that indicate current exposure levels. Six colors, each representing a different luminance level, are superimposed on the viewfinder and display images.

RECORDING OF THE ACCENTUATION AND THE ASPECT MARKER

The Recording Emphasis feature causes a flashing red frame to appear at the edges of the frame while the video is being recorded

In addition, the EOS R6 II also has an aspect marker option that allows you to determine how the footage looks when processed for different aspect ratios, which comes in handy when re-encoding, even for social media.

Some of the most common aspect ratios include 2.35:1 Cinema Scope, 9:16 vertical, 5:4 and 1:1 (for Instagram).

A WIDER CHOICE OF VIDEO EXPOSURE MODES

The new camera update offers more shooting modes, including aperture priority (Av), shutter priority (Tv), manual (M), program (P) and 3 custom settings. This gives users more control over the exposure of their videos.

MULTIFONCTION SHOE

The EOS R6II features a multi-function hot shoe, first seen on the EOS R3. It allows a variety of accessories to be used with the camera without having to worry about battery life.

These compatible accessories include the Canon DM-E1D digital microphone and the Tascam XLR adapter, designed for recording high quality sound.

You can also use the AD-P1 smartphone adapter or the new multi-function Speedlite flashes designed for this shoe.
