Just two years after the release of the first generation, Canon introduces a new and improved EOS R6 II . This newer full-frame mirrorless camera is not only improved in almost every way, but it also comes with a slightly higher price tag.

Canon's RF mount opened up to APS-C format in 2022 with the EOS R7 and EOS R10 . Canon is back with its full-frame cameras by unveiling the next generation of its popular EOS R6. Logically named the EOS R6 Mark II , this new camera aimed at professionals and amateurs will replace its predecessor on store shelves.

The first version of the R6 I I was extremely well received by critics and customers, but two years later, Canon decided to release an updated version. The new camera is supposed to be even more capable than its predecessor while retaining the great versatility that made the original a success.

Given the popularity of the first R6 II , it's no wonder Canon is excited about this new version.

THE CANON EOS R6 MARK II HYBRID IN MORE DETAILS

24.2 MEGAPIXEL FULL-FRAME SENSOR

The EOS R6 Mark II features a Canon-designed 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor that works in unison with the powerful DIGIC X processor. The processor powers many of the camera's advanced features and delivers an excellent balance of resolution and low-light performance while maintaining optimum shooting speed.

The EOS R6 Mark II ’s new sensor delivers faster readout speeds for video and a continuous shooting rate of 40 frames per second in electronic shutter mode. Compared to its predecessor, the new sensor significantly reduces the rolling shutter effect, making more effective use of the camera’s electronic shutter to freeze fast-moving objects. It also enables oversampled 4K 60p video using the full width of the sensor, while helping to improve the focusing speed that is one of the many features of the R6 Mark II .

With an instant 1.6x in-camera crop, you can get closer to the action than ever before with the push of a button. This feature even works when you’re looking through the viewfinder, allowing you to seamlessly zoom in when needed.

ADVANCED DUAL-PIXEL CMOS AF II WITH EYE DETECTION

The Canon EOS R6 II uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, which uses deep learning AI to recognise a wider range of subjects than ever before. These now include people (eye/face/body), vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trains and planes) and animals (dogs, cats, birds and horses).

You can choose the subject type from the menu or, if you’re shooting in a variety of situations, set it to Auto. If you’re trying to detect people or animals, the EOS R6 Mark II will look for eyes first and let you specify whether the left or right eye should take priority. If eyes aren’t visible, it will focus on the face instead; and if the person looks away briefly, it will track the movement of their head. Finally, if neither of these are visible, it will track body movements.

RAW BURST MODE

The Mark II camera body features a pre-shoot option in RAW burst mode, which allows you to capture action 0.5 seconds before you press the shutter. This is extremely useful for shooting unpredictable subjects, such as tennis players or small children, so you don't miss a single moment.

When using high-speed SD memory cards, your continuous shooting speed improves; you can now shoot RAW burst mode photos for 6 seconds at 30 frames per second, for a total of 191 frames.

Instead of being stored in separate files, all images are saved in a single CR3 file called a roll by Canon. This special file includes the AF tracking data as well as the image files.

However, if required, individual JPEGs (or HEIF and RAW files) can be extracted from said roll via Canon's Digital Photo Professional software or within the camera itself before being saved and/or shared.

Canon<span class= %20R6% 20MK%20II/canon-eos-r6-mark-II-7.jpg" alt="R6 II Canon" width="900" height="600" />

MOVIE SERVO AF MODE 'DETECTION ONLY' OPTION

The EOS R6 Mark II now has a video servo focus option called “Detect Only.” This option is similar to the “Face Only” feature on the EOS C70 Cinema camera. When enabled, if the subject specified in the “Subject to Detect” menu moves out of focus, the camera will stay on its current focus point without automatically refocusing on other subjects nearby.

In practice, when you are focused on a subject and it moves out of frame, the camera does not refocus on the background as it traditionally would. Often this is not desirable because the subject is then blurred when it comes back into frame.

Canon<span class= %20R6% 20MK%20II/canon-eos-r6-mark-II-8.jpg" alt="EOS R6 Mk II" width="900" height="600" />

FOCUS BRACKETING IN THE CAMERA

The EOS R6 Mark II 's focus bracketing and depth composition are perfect for when you want to achieve a greater range of depth in your photo.

All you have to do is specify the type of photo you want, press the shutter button and let the camera do its job! This technique allows you to get photos with designated areas that are perfect for landscape or city shots.

With this sequence of images, you can get a perfect, ready-to-use result that you can instantly share with others. You can also use this feature as a preview of what could be achieved in post-production during shooting. This way, you can be sure that you have captured exactly the shot you wanted.

For macro photography, depth composition is ideal when depth of field is limited. With this feature, you can also take less time for post-processing, as it composites multiple images together in-camera.

Canon<span class= %20R6% 20MK%20II/canon-eos-r6-mark-II-9.jpg" alt="Canon EOS R6 Mk II" width="900" height="600" />

4K 60P FULL WIDTH OVERSAMPLED VIDEO AND 6K RAW VIDEO

The EOS R6 Mark II delivers high-definition 4K 60p footage using the full width of the sensor. Plus, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II creates exceptional oversampled images from the 6K output.

The camera body is also conducive to heat retention, allowing you to record up to 610 hours at a time, depending on the temperature of your environment and the capacity of your battery and memory card.

The EOS R6 II produces 6K RAW footage that can be recorded with an Atomos Ninja V+ recorder in ProRes RAW. This not only allows for greater detail, but also allows for adjustments to white balance and other settings in post-production.

Additionally, Full HD proxy footage can be captured internally to a memory card for filmmakers who require even higher performance from their camera.

Canon<span class= %20R6% 20MK%20II/canon-eos-r6-mark-II-10.jpg" alt="EOS R6 Mark II Canon" width="900" height="600" />

ADVANCED THERMAL MANAGEMENT

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II can shoot for extended periods by monitoring and managing temperature increases. Videographers will receive a warning before filming must be halted due to overheating.

To reduce the risk of overheating when the camera is in standby mode between shots, low-resolution standby mode has been enabled. When this feature is enabled, the frame rate and image quality are reduced, saving power and extending recording time.

PRE-RECORDING OF FILMS

The pre-recording function allows you to stream videos that are waiting in the camera.

This way, you won't miss any precious moments while waiting to press the record button. The 3 or 5 seconds of recording before pressing the video record button can be useful for filming unpredictable subjects, such as a wedding or a sporting event.

WEBCAM AND LIVE UVC STREAMING SUPPORT

The Canon R6 Mark II can be used as a webcam on PC and Mac without the need to install additional software to run applications like Skype, Zoom and Teams.

This plug-and-play functionality is powered by the commonly used USB Video Class (UVC) and USB Audio Class (UAC) drivers that come standard with Windows and macOS operating systems.

This ensures that you always look your best when printing online - even better than with a regular computer webcam!

VIDEO ASSISTANCE FEATURES

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is an excellent video camera with several features that guarantee excellent results. This technology has been shared with the cameras used by professional cinematographers.

FALSE COLORS

The EOS R6 Mark II features false-colour warnings that indicate current exposure levels. Six colours, each representing a different luminance level, are superimposed on the viewfinder and viewing screen images.

RECORDING ACCENTUATION AND ASPECT MARKER

The recording sharpening feature causes a flashing red frame to appear that is visible on the edges of the frame while recording video

Additionally, the EOS R6 II also features an aspect ratio marker option that can determine how footage will look when it has been processed for different aspect ratios, which comes in handy when re-encoding, even for social media.

Some of the most common aspect ratios include 2.35:1 Cinema Scope, 9:16 vertical, 5:4, and 1:1 (for Instagram).

A GREATER CHOICE OF VIDEO EXPOSURE MODES

The new camera update offers more shooting modes including aperture priority (Av), shutter priority (Tv), manual (M), program (P) and 3 custom settings. This gives users more control over the exposure of their videos.
